Wipro FAQs for Freshers

July 31, 2007

A quick Q&A session on Wipro:

Regarding DOJ (Date of Joining)?

DOJ will be the first day of joining. The day you officially get integrated with wipro. Why it is getting delayed, there could be many reasons from lot internal allocation to business scope. Don’t worry abt doj. When the HR sent you a mail that you are selected for wipro and do the Medical test and blah blah blah, you got selected. The DOJ and the place to join will be intimated later.

But try to explore oppurtunities in meantime on software/ testing domains which will be helpful when u enter into trainings.

Now regarding trainings, It is not sure that you will be placed in the language you are taught in college. So be open for the oppurtunities. Training will be a peice of cake if you are open for oppurtunities. There is nothing called impossible so be open.

Regarding the placement and the option of transfer?

Well it is a mystery for everyone, because you will be placed based on the requirement not based on your interest. More over you can get transfer if your manager agrees but it is a tough job because they have their own commiments based on your availablity. That is the reason we have a choice of selecting location (based on priorities) before joining. Once joined/filled the form the door is closed for sometime. It might open if needed.

Regarding medical test?

You need to finish your medical before joining (atleast 4 working days before). There is no way without medical you can join wipro

Department and scope?

AS i said earlier about trainings, the scope of your job will be changing time to time. Sicne you are freshers it is easy for wipro to mould you. If you guys say me to work on testing i won’t because i am experienced in some other thing and we always have our options wide open than you. My advice is to learn whatever you see. I know some guys with 2 years experience leading a big projects for fortune 500 clients because of their work in first year.

Regarding department, mostly all departments (means TIS/SAP/HR/TES/PES/EAS etc) are having good scope so don’t worry about department. I accept you are good in s/w development, but i am sure what we know is very little when it comes to client requirement, I have examples of senior persons failing on client interview (a interview to work for clients) so the scope is open if you do it while training. You can change projects when you are not commited to projects (billed) but there are policies for that which will be said on induction.

Well induction (formal joining) will happen on mondays not on fridays

Technologies that you need to know?

You don’t need to know any technology which we studied in our college. because what we are studying in college is not applicable here (except java, .net guys) When i entered into the job (not in wipro but before that), i never know any languages which they asked. but the training they give will be good enough to catch the pace and after that it is your entho to learn more deeper.

Documents to submit?

It must have been said to you guys by HR and course completion certificate is not a provisional certificate. Provisional certificate will be issued by university upon your completion of all semesters.

Confessions of a bond-breaker

May 19, 2007

A guy was asked in his interview with TCS whether having a bond of Rs. 50000 helps in retaining employees, his answer was straight forward “jisko jaana hain woh to jayega hi, having a bond or not doesn’t matter”. The guy was rejected in the interview; perhaps he did a good to himself by not joining a company which forces employees to stay using threat means like bond. But the case for having a employee bond cannot be ruled out completely, if there are employers who believe in exploiting employees there are disloyal employees too. It is fair for companies, which invest a lot in training to have a moral bond. But in no case it should be used as a means to torture employees, if you have a bond with your employer but you are not getting any work (on bench) or you are not happy with your work, it makes sense to leave. If you cant work/live happily with your present employer, your productivity would be low any way, making your employer unhappy.
I don’t recommend breaking a bond but in extreme cases if you wish to, understand the pros and cons well. There are several pros and cons, which are related to breaking bond:

Cons:
1) The employer may chase you to court, I have heard Satyam doing so, Infy has quite good policies in this regard, and they may not trouble you much. Indian law does not permit Bonded Labor; the case can be fought on the basis of money spent on training by employer. Companies, which have big training batches, can go to court, they may lose the case, but it can cost your time and energy. Be careful, as some employers have started viewing breaking bond as a serious offense. It does put a question mark on your resume.
2) You may require experience letter and relieving letter, which you may not get if you break a bond. You can require experience certificate when applying for VISA, MBA or admission to any foreign university. If you go for a job it may not be required, but if a company asks for reference from your old company, whom will look for? If you broke the bond, you cannot have good relations with them.
3) Third reason is more of ethical issues/professional behavior, you get back what you give, if you chose to break the bond today, tomorrow when you start your own company, your first employee may do the same (you have already set an example for him). And it is better to have good relations with everyone, you never know what help you may need in future.
Pros:
1) You can break free from something you never wanted to do, you don’t have to work just because you have a bond, all this can act as positive boost. Very similar to what happens after divorce.
2) Your new company may be prove to be your dream company.
3) Be careful and preserve your offer letter and pay slips, it can come handy when you are asked to prove your experience, imagine during an interview you are asked why the gap is there in your resume.

Last but not the least, please read the review of the company you are going to join at http://www.jobsamiksha.com.

Fresher Salary

May 16, 2007

What is average salary for fresh software engineers? Well depends on your college/degree, salaries can vary from private colleges to NITs/BITs/IITs with the highest range being for IITs (offcourse!!). Do IITians work better than other guys? Well in some cases, may be not because they are capable of, but to prove that they are better. Nature of work in software companies does not give ample scope to those with more gray cells.
Salary also varies from non-computer science to computer science, MCA to B.Tech to M.Tech. The following figures give an indication of the fresh engineer salary; there is no way to compare the exact in-hand salary as the salary component also varies from company to company. If you take into account the purchasing power parity, a high salary in Mumbai may not be equal to a much lower salary in Hyderabad.

What work software companies do?

April 26, 2007

Think of India and ignore software companies? You cant, even if there are no major software products coming out of India, the sheer number of software engineers is something to write about. But what do the 43,000 software engineers in IBM, India actually do? The answer is no straightforward, IT Industry is too big, and it actually works for all the industries you can think off.
Lets go from the basics. Any company, which wants to manage its day-to-day operations like production or sales using computers, would need the following and accordingly companies need to provide similar products/services:
1) System Software Products, which will run the computer, like operating system, yes Microsoft makes them under the windows brand. There are servers like database server (Oracle, DB2 (IBM)), web server (again Microsoft and IBM Labs). All these companies have presence in India but not much of work is done in India, though the trend is changing and companies are fast moving development work to India, after gaining confidence in Indian workforce and in a bid to minimize costs.
2) Application software like Oracle Applications (business suites including packages for Finance, HR), SAP, and i2 (supply chain management). Most of these companies have moved a part of their development work to India. All these products need maintenance, testing and development of new features to survive the competition.
3) Now comes our own homegrown companies like Infosys, TCS. After all we need someone to implement and maintain these products. There are also migration projects say from PeopleSoft HR to SAP HR, or Oracle database to DB2. These companies are called Services Company as they provide implementation, maintenance and migration services to other companies. Globally known software service provides include IBM Global Services, Accenture, EDS, CSC and ADP.
There could be several other classifications there are few more, which deserve mention. But first define what is outsourcing? Outsourcing could be Toyota taking help of a company like ADP for its payroll services, or DHL taking help of Infosys to manage its IT operations. All these makes sense as the company can focus on its core area of work. Outsourcing is a widely accepted business practice though we mostly hear it connection with work being outsourced to India’s cheap labor.
a)Technology consulting -> Companies like Accenture and Deloitte are moving towards technology consulting which is nothing but designing large scale enterprise architecture and technological solutions.
b)Outsourced product development -> Product development is a costly and risky affair which has forced many companies including Yahoo, Ebay to outsource a part of their product development to Indian companies like Aditi Technologies, Tekriti Software.
